BORNEO EXPEDITION 2022

Megadiversity, Orangutans & Pygmy Elephants

17-Day Natural History Itinerary from April 24 – May 10, 2022

Borneo – just the name evokes exotic images of dense jungles, cloud-shrouded mountains, mysterious cultures and unusual wildlife. Indeed, Borneo has all of these attributes and, in places, feels like a lost world where the engines of evolution went wild, exploding with a profusion of plants and animals as yet untouched by human hands. EcoQuest Travel is proud to offer an extraordinary journey to the island of
Borneo! Borneo is the third largest island in the world. It straddles the equator and owes its remarkable biodiversity to its complex geology and historical geography. It is a land born of both Asia and Australia. Borneo is one island belonging to three countries. The northern third is divided into the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah and the tiny independent nation of Brunei, while the southern two-thirds is Indonesian Kalimantan. Our trip will take place entirely within the Malaysian state of Sabah. Sabah offers the best of Borneo with soaring dipterocarp rainforests, meandering rivers, pristine coral reefs and abundant wildlife. An incredible diversity of primates inhabit Sabah’s forests including Maroon Leaf Monkeys, the bizarre, and endemic, Proboscis Monkey and the unquestioned symbol of Borneo, the Orangutan. Tiny nocturnal Tarsiers pounce on insects like little hobgoblins and the whooping duets of Gibbons fill the morning forest with one of nature’s most haunting sounds. Small herds of Pygmy Elephants inhabit the Kinabatangan RiverValley as do Bearded Pigs, Bantang, Mouse Deer, Hairy-nosed Otters and both Marbled and Flat-headed. The birdlife is no less spectacular with hornbills gliding through the canopy; trogons, broadbills, barbets and fruit doves flitting through the branches in riotous colors; and pheasants, partridges and pittas stalking the forest floor. Reptiles, amphibians and butterflies abound. Our trip is specifically designed to highlight the diverse wildlife that makes Borneo such a unique and special place. EcoQuest Travel invites you to join us as we seek Borneo’s megadiversity including Orangutans in lush forests and Pygmy Elephants along hidden rivers.
