EXPEDITION ECUADOR

The Diversity of the Amazon

Dappled light slowly begins to filter through the canopy as the stillness of the pre-dawn is broken by the guttural chorus of red howler monkeys. The sound reverberates through the forest awaking its denizens, stirring the imagination and letting us know that we indeed have arrived in the Amazon.

Such is a typical morning in the spectacular rainforests of Ecuador. These forests in the Amazon Basin are incredibly diverse and may hold more species than anywhere else on earth. EcoQuest Travel is proud to offer an unparalleled wildlife watching journey to the extraordinary country of Ecuador and the amazing Amazon. This trip will concentrate on biodiversity and we will make every effort to maximize our chances of seeing mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects and other arthropods. We will fly from Quito to the remote outpost of Coca. Once in Coca we will board our boat and travel down the Napo River into the heart of the Amazon. We will stay at two lodges located on opposite sides of the Napo River – Sacha Lodge, located north of the Napo and Napo Wildlife Center, located south of the river. Both areas are rich in wildlife and, although there is some species overlap, many of the species are found only on one side of the river. Mammals are generally more difficult to observe, but primate diversity is high and Giant River Otters sometimes make an appearance. The birdlife is fantastic and varied and we search for such incredible birds as Zigzag Heron, Sunbittern, macaws, Hoatzin and a host of trogons, toucans, jacamars, antbirds, cotingas and tanager species. EcoQuest Travel invites you to journey with us as we explore the greatest rainforest on earth – the Amazon!
