KENYA SAFARI

The Wildlife Wonders of East Africa

Kenya is quintessential East Africa – the Africa we envision in our minds eye. Great herds undulating across vast savannas; soda lakes choked with flamingos; the hustle and bustle of Nairobi; the highland forests of Mount Kenya and the scrub forests of the lowlands; Elephants painted red from clay dust baths. Kenya is all of this and much more. Our trip begins in the capital city of Nairobi where we will visit the sites before embarking on our safari to some of the best parks in all of Africa. We begin in the shadow of Mount Kenya exploring the highland forests and moorlands of Aberdare National Park. Our accommodations here surround a flood-lit waterhole which will provide ample opportunities both day and night to witness wildlife drawn to the water. From Aberdare we continue north to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Much of the lands north of Mt. Kenya are privately held conservation areas which were critical to protecting wildlife, especially rhinos, during the worst of the poaching. As a result Ol Pejeta has one of the largest Black Rhino populations in Africa. Ol Pejeta also allows night game drives which are rare in East Africa and will give us chances to observe seldom seen nocturnal animals. After Ol Pejeta we will drive north to Samburu National Park. Samburu is a magical place of dry thorn-scrub and riverine forests full of wildlife including many species we are unlikely to see elsewhere on safari such as Grevy’s Zebra, Gerenuk, Beisa Oryx, Somali Ostrich and Vulturine Guineafowl. From Samburu we travel west to the Great Rift Valley floor and its famous lakes – Baringo, Bogoria and Nakuru. These lakes are known for flamingos, but host an incredible diversity of wildlife. Our safari concludes in the far southwest of Kenya in the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The Mara is arguably Kenya’s finest park and we have timed our visit to take advantage of the great Wildebeest migration which will be arriving from Tanzania. The influx of Wildebeest and Zebras join a host of resident ungulate species like Topi, Coke’s Hartebeest, Impala, Grant’s and Thomson’s Gazelles and African Buffalo. The sheer abundance of prey supports large numbers of predators including Lions, Leopard, Cheetah, Spotted Hyena, Nile Crocodile and numerous smaller carnivores. EcoQuest is proud to invite you to join us in Kenya as we explore the wildlife wonders of East Africa!
