The Gateway to Africa

Ghana is an extraordinarily rich country for wildlife with over 225 species of mammals and 760 species of birds. Much of this diversity is due to the mixing of two different habitats. Southern Ghana is blanketed in large swathes of Guinean rainforest while Northern Ghana is covered by the savannas of the Sahelian plains. We will visit national parks in both habitats to help us observe the maximum amount of biodiversity. Some of the mammals we will try to see includes such West African specialties as Red River Hog, Diana and Mona Monkeys, Red-fronted Gazelle, Water Chevrotain and Giant Eland.
The birding is mind boggling and Ghana is probably the best place in the world to see highly sought-after species like Yellow-headed Picathartes and Egyptian Plover. Add to this West African specialties like Black-casqued Hornbill, Akun Eagle-Owl, Shining Blue Kingfisher, Forbes Plover, and both Black and Blue-moustached Bee-eaters and Ghana stands out as a fantastic birding destination. Ghana also has important historical sites, a vibrant blend of cultures and, unlike much of West Africa, Ghana is stable, safe and welcoming to tourists.
