THE AMAZON OF BRAZIL
Birding the Forests of Cristalino Lodge

11 Days from November 2 – 12, 2018

Amazon!  The word itself evokes images of adventure, giant rivers and vast forests dripping with moisture and life. The rainforests of the Amazon Basin are the largest on earth covering an astounding 2.5 million square miles in nine countries – Brazil, French Guiana, Surinam, Guyana, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Nearly half of the Amazon rainforest occurs in Brazil. The Amazon is home to 20% of the world’s bird species, 20% of the world’s plant species, 10% of its mammal species and between 2000 and 3000 fish species; making this incredible swath of forest the most biologically diverse ecosystem in the world. Our adventure will take us to the remote southwest of the Brazilian Amazon and a very special place called Cristalino Lodge. Cristalino Lodge, and their private reserve, combine nature conservation, scientific research, and ecotourism. The reserve protects 44 square miles of diverse Amazonian habitats including evergreen forests, bamboo forests, deciduous forest and riverine forests. This mosaic of habitats offers some of the best wildlife viewing and birding in Amazonia. We are traveling to Cristalino in November, a transitional month at the end of the dry season, to take advantage of the fruiting vegetation which draws incredible numbers of birds and monkeys. The variety of birds is mindboggling and we will search for them on the many trails through the reserve and atop Cristalino’s two canopy towers. Having birds and primates at eyelevel or below is such a privileged and unique experience! Cristalino is truly a magical place, especially during this time of the year, and EcoQuest Travel proudly invites you to join us as we explore the extraordinary Southwest Amazon.
